Connecting to the seminary linux server


The seminary's linux server, vav.svots.edu, can only be connected to using a secure software program. One such program for Windows, which is free, is called "PuTTY." The installer can be downloaded to your computer by clicking on the link below:

Follow the prompts to open and install the software. We suggest you select the default options during the install process. Once you have installed PuTTY, you need special settings to connect to the seminary server. Click on the following link to download a very small application which will give you the settings to connect to the seminary server:

Download svots-putty.exe

Once you have donwnloaded this small program, open it. You will be prompted to "Extract" the archive. The program will place a file on your desktop called "svots-putty.reg". Double click on this file. The computer will ask you to confirm whether you wish to install the settings into your registry. It is safe to do so.

You may now connect to the seminary server. Simply launch the "PuTTY" program from the Start > Programs menu. Upon launching, the program will give you two options:

After double-clicking on one of the options, you will be able to access the seminary server and database.


On Mac OS X computers - Open the "Terminal" application by navigating to Applications > Utilities. Once a Terminal window is open, type in the following:

ssh -l username vav.svots.edu

Replace "username" with your username on the vav.svots.edu server.
